"WPC" or Wood-Polymer Composites
The wood-plastic composite market has been with us in some form for over 80 years but in terms of building products only (Alternative Decking products) around 24 years.
Its most widespread use is in outdoor deck floors, but it is also used for railings, fences, landscaping timbers, cladding and siding, park benches, moulding and trim, window and door frames, and furniture. Wood-plastic composite is composed of wood from recovered sawdust (and other cellulose-based fiber fillers such aspulp fibers, peanut hulls, bamboo, straw, digestate, etc.) virgin or waste plastics including high-density polyethylene,PVC, PP, ABS, PS and PLA. The powder or fibers are mixed to a dough-like consistency and then extruded or molded to the desired shape. Additives such as colorants, coupling agents, stabilizers, blowing agents, reinforcing agents, foaming agents, lubricants help tailor the end product to the target area of application. The material is formed into both solid andhollow profiles or into injection molded parts and products.
The adoption of alternative materials such as WPC is set to continue and take market share from the traditional materials across a wide range of products. This series of info-blogs is designed to highlight innovative aspects of both products, manufacturing and the market in general. For more detailed information please do not hesitate just "just ask".
